How To

work out the colors in a Namkha:
The
center colors in

  • the upper part - the big rhombus and the three adjoining small rhombi are determined according to the 60 year cycle, ( “Metreng”) of the astrological sequence of the 12 animals and the 5 elements.
  • the lower part - the 4 small rhombi, relate to the numbers 1 to 9, called “Mewa” (lit: "birthmark") numbers.
Together those two create a cycle of 180 years or a “Menkhor”.

Both systems, animal as well as numbers, are then associated with the colors of the five elements. The exact instructions are found in Namkhai Norbu's book: "Namkha" and are collated in graphic form in the calculation tables.

The result of this calculation determines the color in the center of each rhombus.

The next step is to work out the sequence of the bands around the central color:

The deciding factor is the nature of the relationship between the neighboring small rhombi with the central rhombus.

This relationship can be harmonious or conflicting according to the rules of the 5 elements.

The sequences of the surrounding bands are designed to harmonise potential friction.

Furthermore they will always finish with the element that nourishes the Life element of the year, shown in the big rhombus in the upper part. This nourishing, protecting and harmonising energy
is called “La” energy.
